Interview Genís Carreras

You are a designer. Can you tell us about your career so far?

After spending my last 5 years in London working for branding and digital agencies I decided to return to my native Barcelona and start my own design studio here: Studio Carreras. Here I design magazine covers, brand identities, packaging or icons for clients all around the world, mainly Australia, UK and US. I'm the author of a book titled Philographics: Big Ideas in Simple Shapes, which explains philosophical theories using simple shapes and colours and that has been translated to 5 languages so far including Japanese. My work as a graphic artist has been exhibited in NY, London, Paris and Barcelona.

What aspect of designing do you like best?

I love the process of summarising information into visual form, which is my approach to branding and editorial illustration, my two favourite design tasks.

When is a design effective?

When not only allows you to get a message across but also let's you feel it in an instinctive, unconscious way. When the form is part of the message.

Can you tell us about your project 'Philographics'?

It's a personal project that I started 5 years ago with the idea of making philosophy more accessible and attractive. I used the visual language of graphic design to explain some philosophical theories like Dualism, Existentialism or Hedonism. Today, there are 95 theories made as philographics, and they are available as a book, a postcard book and some of them as art prints on my online shop (www.studiocarreras.com).

Which question would you have liked to answer (and what is the answer)?

Where do I see myself in 5 years? I don't know :-)
